Thanks, Trish. This is the juvenile colouration and this guy is around 8-10cm long. The adult males are brown and the females green. I hope you weren’t catching juveniles in Tasmania.
Andrew, we only took fish that were of a good size to eat, well over the 20cm minimum. Those we caught around Dunalley were this one although they were much more brightly coloured when just caught.
That one looks like the southern leatherjacket, Meuschena australis, also known as the brown-striped leatherjacket.
