Flamboyant cuttlefish, Metasepia pfefferi, at Ken’s Reef, Kapalai, Sabah, Malaysia. Depth: 10.4 metres

Nikon D300, Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D, Ikelite housing, Flat port, DS161+DS125 strobes

ISO 200, 1/200, f/16

This was the number one animal I wanted to see and photograph on my trip to Borneo. Shortly after arriving at the resort we went on a “check dive” straight out from the dive centre. I didn’t have time to get the camera read and so went without it. I found a flamboyant cuttlefish in the first few minutes of the dive. I watched it intently for around 5 minutes as it ambled purposely across the sand. It was a thrill to see one in person but I was worried I may not see another when I had my camera.

We did a night dive a few hours later at the same site. I didn’t see one. The next morning we did a dive just north-west of this site and the one above was spotted and I took a number of photographs. I did not see another one for the whole trip.

I have been participating in photography in one form or other since I was very young. It has been a passion that has not left me.

Most of my photographs are of natural subjects both above and below the water, with macro photography being my favourite.

I use Nikon gear and Ikelite housings.

    What a beauty !
Luck was on your side for a while there :)

  • Thanks, Trish. A still photograph doesn’t really do it justice. There were ripples of colour over its body the whole time. Flamboyant is an understatement.

    Well done Andrew,
it is always good to finally find something that we have searched for.
    Regards Colin

  • Thanks, Colin. My next goal is to get some good video footage of one. I’ll have to house the D7000.
