Buddhist Monk in Thailand by

A young Buddhist monk in a rural community in Southern Thailand is just starting off early in the morning to beg for his daily food. A boy living nearby is following just behind. I walked along and we sat together later “talking” (mostly miming) about his life there. He was the guardian of a golden Buddha statue located in a sacred cave. He lived just outside the cave entrance in an orange tent on a wooden platform. The local community consisted mainly of subsistence farmers with a couple of micro businesses. He was only there temporarily and preparing to return to normal life. Most Thai men serve as monks for up to a year with the hope of increasing one’s good karma and perhaps to see more of the world.
