Artist's Description

Darkness comes both slowly and late in the summer in Scotland. I’ve been stood patiently, waiting for the right light for a little over an hour now discussing the scene with a friend and doing battle with the midges that seem determined to eat me alive. There’s typically a 15 minute window at dusk for this kind of shot when the natural ambient light lingering over the landscape balances perfectly with the man made light that in this case illuminates the castle allowing for an image that has detail in both. It’s nearly a full tide; slightly receding which disturbs the reflection a little over the course of the 30 second exposure and in the full size version of the shot, there’s a heron visible standing perfectly still waiting for fish on the shore to the bottom right of the castle. Sometimes it’s the small things that make the image most satisfying; but ultimately a picture has to make you want to be there; and I do want to be back there…
