So I thought I would try something a bit different to my usual photographic stuff with this one. My other stuff don’t really have a specific meaning, they are just there to look nice. This is different.
I think pretty much every person goes through a state of mind where you knock yourself down, do stupid stuff, and basically hate the person you are. For some people it only lasts a day, others have a continuous problem with it.
I know people that have either self harmed or spoken about doing more serious things, and it is just down to self loathing. They hate the person they have become and just want to destroy their new image.
‘The Essence of Self Loathing’ is destroying your image, your personality, the person you are.
My mother wont be happy with this photograph just due to the fact I did this out of rage which has resulted in a large knife wound in the wall. I was angry, so stuck the photograph of myself on the wall (5 photos cost £5!!!) and just stabbed it.
I think it really helped because I was calmer after that.
I just wanted to share this with you all :)

A very powerful image, to which I can relate – as I’m sure many can. I’m just so relieved it was the wall you aimed the knife at and not yourself… or anyone else.
Again… a very powerful image, Andrew. xx
Thank you very much for the comment and favourite Donna. I’m glad that this is something people can relate to.

Def needs a bit of type B dripping down from the knife…
But yeah, definitely powerful thought invoking.
Maybe an album cover???
I never thought of adding anything like that. All I did with this was cooled the image slightly and added a soft vignette, I may have to try to add some things in with it. I’m glad you like this BB =]
May work (With a few extra layers) as an album cover, I’ll look into that.

This is very easy to relate to and a very moving image Andy :)
Thank you very much Rachel :)

This is a brilliantly thought picture Andrew. I keep looking at it, I think its so clever the way you’ve used to depiction of self hate through a picture and through your own experience of it to really grasp the moment in the piece. And also, how much anyone else can relate to it, even when it’s so personal. I really like this one, probably one of my favourite pieces you’ve done.
What a fantastic comment! I really am so very glad that you like this one Katie because it is the one piece that I really wanted to mean something.
Thank you again Katie :)

This picture is amazing. I couldn’t ever have thought of a way to put these really deep and personal feelings into a picture that could have such a great impact.
You’ve made a really moving picture that I and probably lots others can relate to.
Excelent work!
Thank you Cavan :) In honesty, I didn’t initially do this to take a photograph, I was just angry. But once it was there I realised what I had done and why I did it, so I thought I’d try and get those feelings across through photography. I’m so happy with the way it has turned out.
Thanks again :)

wow, what a cathartic release! this is a great shot, and not just in the “it’s a pretty picture” kind of way. truly an amazing concept and execution!
…and now you have a stab mark in the wall to show for it!
Thank you very much, I’m so glad that you like this so much. The stab mark will be a constant reminder for how dedicated I am to photography :D

Very powerful emotive image there Andrew! We all go through these little phases, part of the human condition I guess! I went through a phase there recently myself (see my Guinness photo! lol) I like this just as it is. To add blood etc would be adding too much after work and editing, it would take away from the raw, nervy feel of this as it is. Photos dont bleed, but the people in them do.
I’m going to play about with the image (just for my own amusement, not to post here) and see what the blood would look like because I agree that it would distract from the raw look that this photograph has.
I am glad that you like this :) Thank you Chris.
