The Melbourne Zoo opened in 1865. From those formal Victorian era settings with brick cages and iron bars, the Zoo has evolved into its current Botanic garden setting, which offers a variety of landscapes including rainforests. These are designed to provide a natural environment for the animals and immerse the visitor into the habitat. In most cases these settings provide the photographer with an unencumbered view of the animals.
