I've Arrived At "Tranquillity" - Spotted Dove - NZ by

The Spotted Dove (Spilopelia chinensis) is a small and somewhat long-tailed pigeon which is a common resident breeding bird across its native range on the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. The species has been introduced into many parts of the world and feral populations have become established in many areas outside its native range. These areas include Hawaii, southern California, Mauritius, Australia and New Zealand.

Their cooing is sometimes mistaken for the nocturnal morepork call. The spotted dove does not fit the definition of an invasive species, as they occupy parks and gardens where you normally do not find many native birds.
The Conservation Department agrees… they have no concerns with the increased numbers. A large number of the Asian doves, which are naturally found from India to Timor, were released at Mt Eden in the 1920s, and have been found around Auckland parks and gardens ever since. They are also found in the Bay of Plenty. I was surprised and delighted to find one at “Tranquillity” this morning… I am not sure if there are populations in Southland, or if this one has escaped from an Avery and is looking for food. My fascination with birds began as a child and almost 50 years down the track my love for our feathered friends has not diminished. Once we moved to Tranquillity (our little country retreat) my passion for birds, all nature and wildlife became a digital reality through the lens of my camera.
