I Went For The Silver Not Gold!- Blackbird - NZ by

Please view large…The collectors item is back this year… she is very shy, but I managed to get a few captures through the window… This bird behaves and looks like a black bird. Shis is silver grey with tinges of light blue on her under belly. She is a stunner…I don’t think she is a true Albino, she does not have a red eye. We seem to have a male that wears a skirt… his belly feather are long and almost touch the ground…

FEATURED: THE BIRDS
Albinism and leucism is common in Blackbirds, but there are even more that are “partially albino” (e.g. white head, or white patches on the wings, see photographs below). Albinism is a complete lack of pigment whereas leucistic birds have weak pigmentation and appear “wishy-washy”. Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200 Southland New Zealand Nov. 2012

My fascination with birds began as a child and almost 50 years down the track my love for our feathered friends has not diminished. Once we moved to Tranquillity (our little country retreat) my passion for birds, all nature and wildlife became a digital reality through the lens of my camera.

Wonderful image and information Andrea – never knew you could have albino birds although we have seen one or two Silver Eyes a much paler hue than normal ! This bird is certainly different.

  • I really appreciate your comment and support, and thank you so much Roy… it sure does happen… I think this is the first one I have seen, it was here last year.
