Lignite Pit Scenic Stop Southland New Zealand: Maria and Dave grew up in the Bay of Islands and Dave was brought up in Okaihau. They married and raised three children on 55 acres set back in a beautiful and remote area. They lived with the chorus of kiwis and often shared their home with native bush and insects.
They combined their skills with other members of their family and purchased a large property and together they farmed beef and sheep, they did logging, saw milling, and secured scrub cutting contracts. When sheep income took a down turn and added financial pressure on the families, the decided to sell up and go their separate ways.

Eight years ago they found a farmlette with an old flooded lignite pit. Maria told Dave that “Its beauty must be exposed” so he built a garden with boradwalks around the pit. They cultivated the garden and built a home with a cafe and wedding venue attached.
The garden began to take shape in its infancy, it slowly grew, the lake changed and trees grew larger on the banks and waters edge. The property is becoming covered in native forest and exotic trees. Various species of birds arrived to populate the lake and bush.
Today one can only stand back and admire what the couple have achieved in a short space of time. I could not help but think, it must be a labour of love…It is a beautiful wedding venue, a romantic picnic spot, a place to relax and enjoy nature or an outing for the family. One can also learn so much about history.. a museum has been added with old relics from the past. When we spoke to Dave he said that it was hard work, but he would like to leave behind a message for young people, that anything is possible and dreams can be achieved. The black swans with their 2 day old cygnets are some of the residents that are enjoying the natural environment that Dave and Maria have created.
