Artist's Description

Update on Horatio Harrier Hawk…It was a special day yesterday… we went to visit Horatio the Harrier Hawk that we rescued after he had been hit by a car… See story below….Horatio had two breaks in his leg, the vet operated and placed a pin in the leg. Horatio had the pin removed last week and his leg is healing well, he is now standing on it. Bonnie is still taking care of him, he spends his days out in the garden and his nights in their home. She has clipped his wing to give the leg a chance to strengthen, and by the time he malts and gets his new feathers his leg should be strong enough and he will be free to return to the wild…. to soar the countryside once more. It is wonderful to see him recovering so well and looking healthy, we know that he is in good hands… June 2012 Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 Southland New Zealand

All I Need Is Time… Horatio – Harrier Hawk

The meaning of the name Horatio is ‘Hour, time’. A fitting name for our recovering Hawk Horatio…

Don’t Just Stand There, I Need Help!!!

I’ll Soon Soar The Countryside Once More

We were on our way home when I saw a Harrier Hawk on the railing next to the road side, he was after road kill. I have been after a Hawk shot for two years, but they always take off when we stop the car. Keith turned round and as we were heading back to the spot when we saw a vehicle clipped the hawk. He was moving and dangerously close to on coming traffic, we stopped and I rushed out to see if we could save him. He took off over the paddocks and landed awkwardly, it looked like his leg was broken. There was not stopping me, I was just about to jump the fence and head off in his direction when he got up again and flew across the paddock towards us and landed about a meter away. I was shaking, and so amazed that he came back, it is as if he somehow knew that we were there to help. This magnificent bird was hurt and he was obviously in shock. While Keith was getting the blanket from the car I took a few shots, then managed to get a blanket over him. Carrying him as gently as I could we fled home and put him in the Dog carrier cage. On a Sunday afternoon we were unable to get hold of anyone that could help. So we kept him as comfortable as possible till we could get help. It looks like he has a broken leg and without it he will be unable to hunt. See the next post for the outcome HERE I have never been that close to a Hawk, it is a moving experience, those eyes are amazing, they sure are magnificent birds. This Harrier would have died in the wild as he would no longer have been able to hunt without both legs…
