An update on Horatio the Harrier Hawk who suffered a broken leg after colliding with a car. Bonnie took Horatio to the vet, he has two breaks in the leg. He is doing well and eating which is a good sign. I am still amazed at how Horatio knew to fly back to where we were standing landing a meter away from our feet. He is a survivor and must have sensed that we were there to help. This image was taken seconds after he landed. I am hoping to go and see him over the week end. FEATURED: ANIMAL CAPTIONS & CONFESSIONS
Everywhere in the world raptors are in decline however the Kahu (Harrier Hawk) is holding it’s own despite predators. It became a protected bird in New Zealand in 1985. They are scavengers and most of the time they take the easy option, i.e. road kills, resulting in many of them being killed by high speed traffic. They can be seen year round drifiting over road verges and countryside, soaring in wide circles without apparent fatigue while searching for prey.
