This mornings discovery finished me off….
I got up to let our hens out of the coup as I always do each morning… only to discover that our beloved Chickadee had been killed by a stoat… I am not ashamed to say that I sobbed so hard it hurt… not only for my poor little girl who was rescued from certain death when she was a baby… but for D-Pax the white dove who had become her best friend… Chickadee… RIP my little one, you were a blessing in our lives even if it was only for a short time… I know the life you had with us was a fantastic one… you were such a joy to our family…

I am truly shattered with the loss of two of my girls in such a short space of time… It hurts so much… I know to some these are only chickens… but to us they were a huge part of our family and we loved them dearly…. and miss them both so much… We have spent the entire day looking for any opening and securing the hen house to keep the rest of the chooks safe…

THE STOAT is a member of the mustelid family, along with weasels and ferrets. It was introduced to New Zealand in the 1880s to control rabbits and hares. Stoats are now considered “public enemy number one” for New Zealand birds.
