Artist's Description

The Domestic Canary, often simply known as the canary, (Serinus canaria domestica) is a domesticated form of the wild Canary, a small songbird in the finch family originating from the Macaronesian Islands (Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands). Canaries were first bred in captivity in the 17th century. They were brought over by Spanish sailors to Europe. Many breeds arose through selective breeding, and they are still very popular today for their voice.
I’m The Red Factor Type!!! – Red Bronze Canary

These lovely birds are of the Finch family and were found in the wild in the Canary islands and were domesticated over 400 years ago. Canaries are generally divided into three categories: bred for Song (specific melodies), bred for Type (conformation and shape), and bred for Color (multitude of colours).
The Colorbred is a type of canary that has been bred to bring a specific desired color with little or no regard for singing ability or Type. The Red Factor canary being the most well known. Any canary with a red factor gene can be referred to as a “red factor”. The dark red canaries are called Red Bronze, Intense Red Bronze, Melanin Bronze and a few others. Coloring foods are supplied to effectively intensify the red color. In nature, the birds eat various compounds which are absorbed by the red genes and produce the bright red plumage. The natural compound which produces the red color is beta carotene which is found in vegetables like carrots, several varieties of grass seeds, paprika, and dark vegetables like red peppers. However, this is not intense enough to develop maximum coloring and breeders use synthetic agents to maximize the color. The most popular coloring agent is Canthanxanthin, which can be fed via nestling food or other soft foods or dissolved in water. Amazing the colours they produce in these birds. It is always an education visiting the Dunedin Gardens and learning about the different birds. March 2012 Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 Otago Dunedin Southland NZ
