Me..ME...MEEE.... First!!! - Welcome Swallows - NZ by

A pair of Juvenile Welcome Swallows hanging out for a feed at Manapouri Lakes in Southland… It was amazing to watch Mum & Dad fly in pop the food in their beaks and take off again without stopping or landing. Lake Manapouri is a lake in the South Island of New Zealand. Its name is Maori for “sorrowful heart”, though this name is misapplied due to an early cartographical error (the real Lake Manapouri was North Mavora Lake, which lies some distance to the east). Local Maori called Lake Manapouri Moturau, which means “many islands”. These adorable little birds bring back so many childhood memories of the beautiful story books “Pookie & The Swallows” I loved those books…

Our welcome swallows came from Australia, where they migrated between mainland Australia and Tasmania. It was probably when they got caught in a storm which blew them towards New Zealand. Some of them made it to Northland in the 1950s. They nested there and raised chicks. As their numbers increased, they spread south. Now they can be found all over New Zealand. Welcome swallows are native birds because they arrived here by themselves.

My fascination with birds began as a child and almost 50 years down the track my love for our feathered friends has not diminished. Once we moved to Tranquillity (our little country retreat) my passion for birds, all nature and wildlife became a digital reality through the lens of my camera.

I bet those parents are so worn out! Great progression of images, Andrea. Your info regarding the lake’s name caused me to wonder how many cartographical errors have been made over the centuries all over the world, and how many have never been corrected. I might not be living where I think I live…LOL. Sandy

  • Your lovely kind comment is so very much appreciated, thank you Sandy… you are right.. I wonder how many errors there are…
