A trip out of town this week end to Manapouri to photograph a wedding. The wedding was amazing and the bride and groom were beautiful… Having said all that… the highlight of the trip was photographing these two little adorable juvenile Welcome Swallows. They were sprinkled with a little bit of rain and it was love at first sight for me. The parents were darting back and fourth feeding them and I could have spent the entire week end watching them. These little fluff balls looked so cute waiting for their breakfast. Please view large for full effect…
We’d Welcome An Insect Or Two!! – Welcome Swallows
FEATURED: ANIMAL CAPTIONS & CONFESSIONS, AROUND THE WORLD, THE BIRDS, CAPTION FUN, LUMIX LOVERS
Our welcome swallows came from Australia, where they migrated between mainland Australia and Tasmania. It was probably when they got caught in a storm which blew them towards New Zealand. Some of them made it to Northland in the 1950s. They nested there and raised chicks. As their numbers increased, they spread south. Now they can be found all over New Zealand. Welcome swallows are native birds because they arrived here by themselves.

The Welcome Swallow is a newcomer on the New Zealand native bird scene. Winging it from Australia, it has made a big impression in its short time on these shores. They are a welcome addition, It is a beautiful bird with dark coat of black and brown and a fiery red underbelly – indicative of it’s deep powerful presence and burning passion for its new home. A vote for the Welcome Swallow is a vote for the new era of NZ bird life…

My fascination with birds began as a child and almost 50 years down the track my love for our feathered friends has not diminished. Once we moved to Tranquillity (our little country retreat) my passion for birds, all nature and wildlife became a digital reality through the lens of my camera.
