Love At First Bite
We were fortunate enough to stumble across a pair of “Rapoka” courting in the Catlins. The beach was deserted aside from this courting couple and a few sea birds scattered here and there. Waipapa Point in the Catlins a deserted coastline where the New Zealand Sea Lion “Rapoka” can sometimes be found, it is one of the world’s rarest sea lions and endemic to this country. If they feel threatened they may chase you and can bite. As seen in the youtube clip, we did not hang around to see if she meant business, we decided to leave them in peace… This endangered species of sea lion lives around the coasts of New Zealand and its surrounding islands. Life span: About 20 years. 200cm long (females), 350cm long (males) and weighing up to 230kg (females) or 410kg (males). Diet:Octopus, fish, crustaceans, mussels and penguins.
