Dinky duck enjoying her pond when she was younger. A little puddle duck that has brought us many smiles and in so many ways has touched our lives and the lives of others. Des who is 86 years and Coreen who is 70 kindly offered to baby sit Dinky when we were away in Christchurch for Keith’s operation. Here is her note…

Hi you two,
Wow! I’ve never hand fed a duck before, and I’ve never taken a duck for a walk! Nor have I seen such a tame, friendly duck. She’s gorgeous. When I call, she comes, while the hens only do so when I have food for them. They’re wonderful cleaner-uppers of scraps. They watch at the kitchen window when I’m preparing tea, and of course are rewarded with scraps, even left-over mashed potato which I usually eat myself. However, Dinky really enjoys her duck-weed, her tomato and cabbage. We forayed forth this afternoon for the afore-mentioned walk to the duck-weed stream. Des couldn’t get over Dinky coming with us. She didn’t really swim, but had fun eating & foraging meanwhile I held on to the fence & bravely tired to get weed. At least only a foot & leg went in and got muddy and wet! Des held on to the fence got me out again! Des managed to get some weed, for which Dinky is suitably thankful. You’ve certainly got your ménage well trained – or they’ve got you well-trained! The wild birds are great to watch. I can’t believe how enthusiastic they are when the fat roll is put out! You’ve convinced me to be kinder to my wee feathered friends when they visit. It’s now Monday morning. I let Dinky out (6.30) & she flew from the edge of her pond. I was devastated. I put on yesterdays dirty clothes and walked down to the weed, calling to her. She was in the week creek, having a lovely time. After she thought I’d had enough, she climbed out and waddled home beside me. I gave her some tomato, for which she was duly grateful. Des can not believe what a wonderful little intelligent companion Dinky is and how she loves to sit on his lap for a cuddle…. He does not stop talking about her… Bless you for saving and sharing this precious feathered life it will forever change us…
GOD Bless Coreen & Des
