The Mallard is widely distributed across the Northern Hemisphere, North America from southern and central Alaska to Mexico, the Hawaiian Islands, and across Eurasia, from Iceland and southern Greenland and parts of Morocco (North Africa) in the west, Scandinavia to the north, and to Siberia, Japan, and China in the east. It is strongly migratory in the northern parts of its breeding range, and winters farther south. The Mallard inhabits a wide range of habitat and climates, from Arctic Tundra to subtropical regions. It is found in both fresh- and salt water wetlands, including parks, small ponds, rivers, lakes and estuaries, as well as shallow inlets and open sea within sight of the coastline. Water depths of less than 1 m (4 ft) are preferred, birds avoiding areas more than a few metres deep. They are attracted to bodies of water with aquatic vegetation. A day outing yesterday and on our way home we saw this tiny little duck on the road. We stopped and rescued him before he got run over, then searched to see if we could find him mum.. She was no where to be found and it was getting dark. I could not leave him/her on the side of the road, so she/he is now safe and home with us. I shall raise him, then set him free on one of the large ponds in the area so that he/she can mix with other ducks. I just could not bear the idea of a predator getting hold of this little bundle of fluff… It would be far better if his/her mum could raise him and show him the ways of the wild. Oh, I have fallen in love …. what a sweet little duckling!! You will have a friend for life now Andrea, these little ducks are amazing and will bond with you….. just be careful she doesn’t follow you inside and try and jump into the bathtub, LOL!! I have a friend who has raised a duck, and it sits on her lap, has a bath and generally is a wonderful pet, see here

hmmm, I wonder how Little Fluff got there? Surely mum wouldn’t have left him behind? Perhaps he fell out of a passing truck? Lucky for him, it was you who found him- the bird woman! lol : ) He’s sure to be just fine now! Andrea, what shall you feed the little fella? I’ve always had a heart for animals, never could just leave one to its’ demise. Oh, beautiful photo of him!! Don’t forget, you must give him a name now!! : )
Many thanks for your lovely kind comment Steph, much appreciated. We have named it Dinky. There are many mallards in the wild here, mum could have been run over or died. I was just thankful that we were passing at that moment. He is now part of our growing bird family.
