Hey!!! Who Needs A Spud Peeler - Galah - NZ by

The Galah (pronounced /ɡəˈlɑː/), Eolophus roseicapilla, also known as the Rose-breasted Cockatoo, Galah Cockatoo, Roseate Cockatoo or Pink and Grey, is one of the most common and widespread cockatoos, and it can be found in open country in almost all parts of mainland Australia. Galahs are highly social and very long-lived; though they are sometimes kept as pets, this is not something to be undertaken lightly as they bond socially with their owners and may well outlive them, and like most cockatoos, are noisy and require a great deal of attention and care. They are however very easy to keep and maintain as pets. Both male and female galahs are great talkers, but the male is thought to be the better talker. They’re very loving and affectionate birds that have a tendency to purr like cats as a sign of their affection. They form a very strong bond with their owner and like to think of themselves as ‘part of the family’. However, they do like their privacy at times and are quite happy to simply be around the family rather than be handled all hours of the day.
I had gathered a bucket load of fresh potatoes from the garden, Dela our Galah was out and about and before I knew it, he had climbed into the bucket and was busy throwing them out of the bucket and peeling the potatoes for me. Their beaks are very strong and one has to keep an eye on them especially if you have a wooden house….Dela was hand raised and has been with us for 6 years now, he has a wonderful vocabulary and it just makes our day when we uncover him in the morning and are greeted with “Good morning sweetheart, Good morning my darling”

My fascination with birds began as a child and almost 50 years down the track my love for our feathered friends has not diminished. Once we moved to Tranquillity (our little country retreat) my passion for birds, all nature and wildlife became a digital reality through the lens of my camera.

That is too funny, Andrea! Is he going to mash them or make French fries? Such a beautiful bird!

  • I think that Dela prefers mash to French fries Dot. Thank you for your lovely kind comment, much appreciated.

I can still recall the feeling of that tongue from my childhood , and the incredible screeching of a feeding young galah covered in weetbix and milk ( I think that was what we fed them last century ) Also the sound of flocks of them taking off from the trees in the dawn light . These birds bring back long forgotten memories:-)
    Thanks

  • They have amazing tongues. I am so pleased that Dela brought back memories for you Ron. Thank you for your lovely kind comment, much appreciated.
