The first use of “whoops-a-daisy” is thought to have been around 1925, in a New Yorke cartoon. It’s an expression of surprise or dismay, specifically upon discovering one’s own error. The modern-day equivalent would be “D’oh!”, I’m afraid, which is much less expressive. The term was shortened to “whoops” by 1937, and appears in that form in a letter by Ezra Pound, no less. One assumes that it was related to the expression “to whoop,” as in giving “whoops of joy.” That usage goes back to the early 1600s. Let us not forget that Hugh Grant said it to Julia Roberts in the wonderful movie Notting Hill, I love that movie.

Whoops-a- Daisy!

Take Time To Stop And Smell The Roses

My fascination with birds began as a child and almost 50 years down the track my love for our feathered friends has not diminished. Once we moved to Tranquillity (our little country retreat) my passion for birds, all nature and wildlife became a digital reality through the lens of my camera.
