What on Earth are you! - Baby Magpie - NZ - Southland by

Having discovered this little bundle of feathers, I had to pop back to the field next door along our rural road to see if I could get some closer captures. Mum and Dad were not very pleased with me, I was dive bombed and given the “GO AWAY” Stare.

Australian magpies (Gymnorhina tibicen) were introduced in the 1860s and 1870s in Canterbury, Otago, Auckland (Kawau Island), Hawke’s Bay and Wellington. They came from Victoria and Tasmania. These populations expanded slowly, remaining separate for many years. The original Otago population has disappeared altogether, but magpies are now found over most of the country except the most densely forested regions, such as Fiordland, or the most open country, such as Central Otago. Magpies were introduced to control pasture pests, which is why they were protected until 1951.

My fascination with birds began as a child and almost 50 years down the track my love for our feathered friends has not diminished. Once we moved to Tranquillity (our little country retreat) my passion for birds, all nature and wildlife became a digital reality through the lens of my camera.

Of this little fella had the misfortune of ending up
on the ground after he fell from the nest and you rescued him he would thing you were his mum ;-) beautiful shot!

  • Thank you for your awesome comment, much appreciated. The parents are still guarding him and feeding him. I will keep an eye on him and let the parents finish the job of rearing him, as much as I would love to have him as a pet.

Fabulous closeup! You must be having so much fun with your wonderful bird photography.

  • Thank you Dot, much appreciated. My hubby Keith says I was like a caged bird before I semi retired, now I am set free to fly with my lens. I just love birds and photographing them brings so much joy, not only to me, but to others, thank you once again.
