A different angle of the red hen taking a dust bath in a hole in the ground next to the old shed. I had to lie on my stomach on the ground to get this capture. I am sure she thought that I was completely insane. Her sister did not care, she was clambering all over me while I was trying to hold still to get these captures. The third hen was in the dust bath pit. When we got the three hens, they did not know how to perch, nor had they seen real grass. Most breeders have their hens in little cages indoors. It was wonderful to watch them discover earth, grass, rain, and even snow. Their instincts lead them and in no time they were scratching in the dirt finding worms and making dust bath pits. It was wonderful to watch their excitement, enjoyment and explorations. They are now free range, and roam freely round our property.
