Artist's Description

I was alerted by sunshine our little sun counure who is 9 months old that there was an intruder on our rural property. He is a brilliant watch dog, and we have learned what the meaning of the different sounds are that he makes. He does a deep growl when it is a big bird, Hawk, Magpie or black bird, and he screeches when it is a human intruder. His cage is next to the window looking out, and he spotted Maggie Pie as she landed on the fence. I snuck out of the back door with my camera to take this shot before Maggie took off.
Information on Magpies.
Magpies have a complex social system in which individual magpies may occur in non-territorial flocks or territorial pairs. Magpies defend their territory by singing, aggressive posturing and fighting. It is this aggressive territorial behaviour that makes magpies a pest. Magpies attack and occasionally kill other birds. Although magpies have been known to attack native birds, this is an insignificant threat compared to the problems imposed on our native birds by mammal pests.
