Don't worry! Wood Pigeon Pair - New Zealand by

Living in a rural area we are fortunate to come across some magnificent birds. The New Zealand Pigeons make occasional soft coo sounds, and their wings make a very distinctive “whooshing” sound as they fly. The bird’s flight is also very distinctive. Birds will often ascend slowly before making impressively steep parabolic dives; it is thought that this behaviour is often associated with nesting, or nest failure.
Location Taken: Gore, Southland, New Zealand.

My fascination with birds began as a child and almost 50 years down the track my love for our feathered friends has not diminished. Once we moved to Tranquillity (our little country retreat) my passion for birds, all nature and wildlife became a digital reality through the lens of my camera.

Holy the one looks like my dog LOL! He is so big! I just love these pigeons – here they are more grey and pink very light in those colours. Beautiful! Your work is amazing and I so love to see!

  • Thanks Rose, they posed for me in the garden today. They are huge, and the sound they make when they fly is awesome. The Hawks love them unfortunately, but I guess that is nature.

Lovely photo Andrea – we were surprised at how much bigger our Kereru are

compared to the English wood pigeon.

  • Thank you Roy, they are rather large!

A lovely shot of my favourite New Zealand bird. Excellent work Andrea.

  • Thank you Ralph, did you find any while you were in New Zealand?

I did but I don’t think I got a decent shot though. I’ll have to take another look at my photos later
