Falcon-Karearea - Endangered in New Zealand by

Karearea, the endangered New Zealand falcon
Capable of flying at speeds over 100 km/h and catching prey larger than itself, the New Zealand falcon/kārearea (Falco novaeseelandiae) is one of New Zealand’s most spectacular birds.
One of 38 species of falcon worldwide, the New Zealand falcon is endemic to this country. The World Conservation Union classifies the falcon as a near-threatened species. This Photo was taken last year at Castle Rock, I am guessing it is a juvenile as he was not afraid of us. Photo taken with Fujifilm finepix s5100

  • Thanks Rose, he is a beauty. I always thought it was a Hawk till I did some research today and I was excited and delighted that it was a Falcon.

What a beautiful capture of this gorgeous bird, Andrea!! You have a love for birds like myself, eagles are my favorite because they live all around and I got some pretty fantastic shots of them. I worked at a offloading dock, we offload fish, and I was very kind to the eagles and in return they gave me what I wanted. :)

  • What a wonderful message, thank you. The birds of prey have always fascinated me and I have set myself a goal to get some great shots this year. Thanks for sharing your story it is inspiring.
