Our 2013 Trip is over… Dubai, Africa and Bangkok

It felt like we flew half way around the world… Leaving Southland and making our way to Christchurch. We caught our flight, the first leg of our journey took us to Sydney Australia for a stop over then on to Dubai for 2 nights… The desert safari in the 1950’s open air Land rovers was a treat… falconry, camels, dunes, local cuisine, the peace pipe and some belly dancing… And the gold souk was amazing…

2 nd leg of our Journey took us to Johannesburg (Gauteng), a week of catching up and meeting new family members and friends that we had not seen in 10 years… and trying to take in the many changes that have happened since we left… Wow…

3rd leg of our journey, encounters with wild Africa…

First stop was a unique experience… something we thought the Kiwi’s would really enjoy…our accommodation in Tree Houses that were situated in a tranquil bush setting. Each unit had a spacious balcony where we sat and viewed herds of animals passing below including a view of the magnificent giraffe eye to eye. A bush walk with our experienced guide educated us on some of the interesting facts of Wild Africa…

Our second stop was Letaba in the Kruger National Park… We enjoyed driving ourselves, exploring the Kruger Park by day, game viewing was average, as it was very dry and incredibly hot… (not much rain)… By night we enjoyed the cool evening, the milky way and the night sounds while we sang songs around the camp fire… Our accommodation was a beautiful thatched home with it’s own hide situated above the river for game viewing… An excellent stay…

Our third stop was Mabalingwe Nature reserve, another beautiful thatched home, with a pool, balcony, water hole for game viewing and amazing braai area… Game drives by day, stunning sunsets in the evenings, and fillet cooked to perfection on the braai…

Two more weeks in Johannesburg (Gauteng) with our amazing hosts, 6.5 acres, pool, and more food than one could possibly consume… Quality time with immediate family and close friends… Night bon fires, toasted marshmallows, lots of laughs and walks down memory lane… Keith entertained us with his ukulele, and we sang songs till almost dawn… Making the most of the precious time that we had… A few amazing thunder storms and no electricity for 24 hours… a common happening in SA… but we carried on by candle light and boiled water on gas for coffee…

A sad farewell and many tears as we boarded the plane once more for Dubai, a short stop over, then on to Bangkok Thailand for 1 week… a four hour taxi ride to our accommodation at Sam Roi Yod National park… The Thai people live a simple life, they are beautiful peaceful people.. we hired scooters and stopped off in the many fishing villages, ate fresh prawns, fresh fruit and coconuts, watched sunsets and sun rises, and enjoyed the different sights.. An amazing experience.. Another 4 hour taxi ride to the airport, a stop over in Sydney, then on to Christchurch and finally back to Southland and “Tranquillity” Home with our beautiful feathered friends…

Many memory cards were filled with 40 000 photos of family, friends, wildlife, birds, people and places… I may have my work cut out from me…

Here is a short clip on the African part of our trip.

I look forward to catching up with all of your amazing works, and will load up some new works over the next few weeks…
