Some of our beautiful endangered, endemic and introduced bird spices and scenery on Stewart Island.
Stewart Island offers some of the best land and sea birding in New Zealand. Ulva Island is a jewel in the crown offering a predator-free environment for rare and endangered birds. Stewart Island is one of the largest naturally forested islands remaining anywhere…a primeval wilderness of of podocarp rainforests, freshwater wetlands, dune lands and granite mountains, surrounded by 170 smaller islands and rocky islets. 400 people live on the island, in and around Oban in Halfmoon Bay. 80% of the island is protected. The island has remained free of many introduced animal pests. The department of conservation is very active in there battle to keep the island predator free. Predation by possums, rats and cats has nevertheless affected bird-life on the Island. In recent years pest control on the islands has resulted in habitat recovery, increased bird numbers and enabled the reintroduction of several species.
