Krakow Kazimierz is a particular and unusual place, diverse in social aspects, culture, architecture, and religion. History blends with a modern art in every street and in every town house. Kazimierz, now a vibrant Krakow district, which lies to the south of the Royal Castle, was once a town in its own right from 14th to 19th century. With its labyrinthine streets and low-standing houses, where a Polish and Jewish culture coexisted, it feels like a different world to the Old Town of Krakow, and indeed it is a perfect place not only for tourists but Krakow citizens as well.
For many years the district of Kazimierz, was in ruins, with deserted houses and a crumbling shell of its former self. However, just a few years back, Kazimierz is undergoing a major renaissance. Jewish Culture Festival, Serena Street – the heart of the old Jewish district and a film by Steven Spielberg and rising interest in Jewish art and culture contributed to the phenomena.
oday’s Krakow Kazimierz still preserves a climate of an old Jewish district – still on Szeroka street there are old Jewish synagogues, with the oldest one in Poland known as the Old Synagogue and two still open, one of them being The Remuth Synagogue with an adjacent cemetery. There are numerous exhibitions on display presenting the heritage of Jewish culture
