Artist's Description

This is a bit later in the morning than the first shot.

Inspired by Philip Johnson’s post to go and have a look at my shots from the last Balloon Fest I got to. As this was when I had returned to canberra to bring back a trailer load of household goods, which was hitched to the car t at the time, they are all from the bottom of Anzac parade, across the lake from where the balloons lift off.

I absolutely loved the balloon festival, used to be up every morning for the 10 days when I lived there, but it is all on film. I’ll have to dig them out and get some negs scanned. It is an absolutely magical event (held every March) and photographer’s paradise.

A few tips:

1. Get down to the lawns in front of old Parliament House for those magical inflating shots EARLY. I’m talking 1 hour before sunrise.
2. Wear waterproof footwear – very dewy
3. Take a thermos and bite to eat, unless you are wealthy, in which case you can buy it there
3. Take LOTS of shots. Up the balloon as they inflate them on the ground pre-burner (they use big fans) can be good and you often get people walking round inside. SOmetimes they’ll let you in there if you have soft soled shoes on and you can get great shots.
4. Watch out for small children – their expressions are just amazing when they see these huge things inflating. Even back then, I used to carry some cards and give one to the parents so they would be reassured I was not some perv!
4. Depending on the wind, locate yourself on one of the ‘mountains’ round Canberra on at least a couple of mornings – Mt Ainslie is always good as it overlooks the liftoff site, and Black Mountain can be fabulous.
5. Down by the lakeside can be excellent when they start to drift low for landing – you can get really nice reflections

And have fun!
