Swell sunrise sans sculptures by Odille Esmonde-Morgan

As I have been threatened and lambasted for sharing images of what I considered beautiful works by talented (but, ultimately, small minded) people, here is my original Swell sunrise shot reworked with Chi Phan’s very nice sculpture cloned out.

17 Sept 2010, H2 x 2 shot pano, 50-110 lens

And I have been honoured to have this work FEATURED by:
The Rainbow Group
Quality Art & Photography – 17 July 2011

In the late 1970s I completed the 2 years of a 4 yr Professional Photography Cert at TAFE, but was defeated by the physics of lenses.
In 2004 I bought my first DSLR & now shoot full time with medium format digital and professional Canon DSLRs.
I provide tuition to small groups via photography workshops for small groups (max 5) and Photoshop PP classes, and conduct small group photography tours to Australian & (soon) NZ destinations.

I’m sorry to hear you’ve been abused for sharing photos of sculptures! I’m interested to know who abused you, and why they felt it was necessary? After all, teh Swell festival puts sculpture into the public eye for a reason, and if you’re not allowed to photograph them then I’m sure they wouldn’t put them up! I, personally am shocked that you’ve felt you had to remove images of the sculptures, and would like you to report the complainers to Redbubble.

  • There was huge fracas about it all after the Swell Sculpture festival on the Gold Coast last year. Initially, the sculptors themselves ‘Liked’ my pics via Facebook (I have my RB linked to it) and were fine. Then some woman via RB stirred up trouble saying we were abusing the sculptors copyright and robbing them of monies that should be rightfully going to the ‘original artists’ etc.
I never actually sold any pics of the sculptures and cannot see how a postcard or small print (all I think anyone would buy unless they were a relative) would be depriving them of income. Especially considering the artist making all the fuss had a sculpture work that would have cost you $20,000+!
But the fracas was really making me ill, dispirited and turning me right off, so I pulled all the shots.
It was a real (unpleasant) eye opener and I will never attend another open sculpture festival as long as I live, they can all get stuffed

And I had even links to the sculptors home pages where they had them so I was giving them extra exposure, and all my images said who the artists were and everything. It was very mean spirited. And some other RBers contacted me and said they had been treated similarly, it was a very concerted attack on photographers of redBubble, in my opinion.

Wow, I’m shocked and stunned! I photographed the Swell festival back in 2006 and 2007 and never had a problem! You sure did all the right things by offering links to the artists home pages etc, I’m surprised they were miffed! Well, I’ll stand with you, I certainly won’t be photographing any more Swell festivals if that’s how they treat the visitors! sheeeesh!

    Beautiful shot…love the sky.

  • Thanks Kent, it was very striking and so pink, hardly any orange. I was really pleased to catch that pink.
