Tall as first floor apartment
Lucent I am left to squat in splendor
In vigil I survey the scene around me
Peace and Goodwill to Mankind?
Caroler’s gather to my side
“Oh Come All Ye Faithful”
Recital pleasures omitted like the
Influenza spreading filth filled malls
Sporadic festive bustle heaves
Armload’s of wan-tom greed
Hefty cumbersome signatures of
Love appreciation and forgiveness
Peace and Goodwill to Mankind?
Children gaze at my heavy laid-en arms
Tired legs remain tucked underneath my skirt
Brightly lit I shine full bodied at them
My head with guardian angel perched upon
“Ho! Ho! Ho!” Santa’s voice echoes throughout
Hear children squeal excitement pleasure
Like mice having found abundant feast
Memory making gift to treasure
Peace and Goodwill to Mankind?
Sanctified nativity in
Reticence retentive resurrection
Merry-go-rounds of spinning horses unicorns
Skaters whizzing whirling delicately on ice-rink
Oh the commercialism!
Do we really remember
The true meaning of Christmas Past?
January hike me up another forgotten
Peace and Goodwill to Mankind?

Hi Anne-Marie – you’ve woven so much into this piece of writing….all the consumerist-obsessiveness we encounter on a dialy basis…hyping everything up….the insanity of it all at times…and yet you pose the question – a good question – does this amount to peace and goodwill to mankind?
you’ve given us all something to think about here….like you i find a lot of the glitzyness annoying and superficial, but i think in another sense, it’s also nice to have a time of year that people connect and exchange love …even if globally this is not possible…which of course is your point – the larger picture!
thanks for sharing this …suzanne

Hi Suzanne, glad you understood the depths of this write, just wanted to give you all food for thought for a while, the adolescents of today with their greed and endless dis satisfaction of things got me set on it i’m afraid! So different to when we were children when you were grateful for anything!! lol. Seasonal greetings to you and yours…..Anna-Marie.

I can recall the changes my grandson made when we first got him to raise. He was so little and so polite and so grateful for everything. Then he started to school and he began to take on the attitude of so many other of today’s children…me-me I-I… this reminds me so much of the whole family get-together with relatives.. get an email that your name was chosen to buy someone a gift..maybe a member of the family you only saw once a year…maybe one you don’t even like… And everybody scrambling to eat as much food as they can until they hurt…and then add desert on top of that.
The mad scramble to pass out presents from whomever drew your name and open up something you never needed and never wanted… but nobody mentions Jesus.
The birth of Christ all but forgotten while the new “latest hit movie” is popped into the DVD for everyone to watch. The kids are off playing with their new toys and video games…
But hey, “it’s about family getting together,” they say. And how do you like our Christmas Tree…it is the prettiest one on the block, don’t you think?”
“What?...Oh Jesus Christ”...and I am not cursing…just thinking out loud…”Forgive them, for they know not what they do….”
