Tramps Christmas

" ‘Tis the season to be jolly," the school’s choir sings
as the town tree splashed with multi coloured light bulbs is lit
Strings of lights sway as they zig-zag the High Street from left to right,
with the odd Santa face, reindeer, or Merry Christmas jutting out
proud of the walls, where children below look up with glee, wonder and surprise
Chilled, damp, wintry air hangs heavy with tempting wafts of delicious fragraces
hot dogs, burgers, soup, jacket potatoes and hot chestnuts. to warm and delight
“Oh yea! Oh yea! Oh yea!” Town Crier draws attention
as he unrolls his scroll to proclaim once again “The Good News”
That Christ our Saviour was born on Christmas Day
and lays in a manger in stable in Bethlehem, place far away
“Ho! Ho! Ho!” Santa sings and jingle jangle sleigh bells ring
Parents and children have flocked to see what promises of gifts he brings
Shops open late with music blaring, giving balloons and discounts, all enticing in
And all the time Salvation Army brings us carols like “Away in a manger”
whilst collecting for the homeless ‘Soup Kitchens’
that cold stark Christmas brings ‘God bless them’,
as they try to give some fleeting warmth, sustance and joy
to those of us too ragged and unkempt
for to join in the festivities enjoyed by others
even though we have not all necessarily chosen such way of life
Now stuck under the seasonal canopy of clearest starlight
and frosty air we must remain huddled in the shaddows
Our only news is taken and told from discarded newspapers
that we then use to pack holes in worn out shoes
Charity bag or thrown out clothing is layered on our backs
to try keep us from old frosty ‘Jack’
Sorry, we’re all out of Christmas cheer
our little money gone on guzzling gin and beer
to help us forget and keep us warm
alone or with shared company of each other
for there’s no ‘seasonal love’ when you’re ‘nobody’
But we grow stronger with resiliance
frozen hard that we might say
we’ve lived to see another Christmas Day!
