Ville de Coutances and Cathedral

Coutances is one of the oldest town’s of France. The history is rich going back as far to the time of the Romans. Notre Dame de Coutances is amazing to see from a distance. It is like a palace, a castle that has with stood time. Thankfully the Germans did not destroy the cathedral in WWII, even though most of Coutances was wiped out.

This cathedral has a rich history dating back to the 5th century. An invasion of the Normans in the 9th century left the cathedral destroyed, rebuilt in the mid-11th century in the Romanesque or Norman style. The consecration was attended by William, Duke of Normandy (later known as the Conqueror), in 1056. A serious fire in 1210 introduced the present Gothic cathedral, completed in 1274. The architect was the same that designed Notre Dame, in Paris. The cathedral was fortunate to have escaped destruction during WWII, unlike the town of Coutances that needed to be completely rebuilt.

Notre Dame de Coutances is a National site of France.
