"Castellon Peak. (Big Bend National Park)" by

(5-6/2009) During Spring Break I visited Big Bend National Park. I always love visiting there during March because it isn’t too hot yet and all the wildflowers are blooming. I decided to paint Castellon Peak which reaches an altitude of 3,293 ft. and stands 1,030 ft. above the road. The peak itself is a volcanic vent and it is capped by a rhyolite dome. Castellon Peak looks just beautiful when the sun is beginning to set and you are driving up Ross Maxwell drive beside it. As the light diminishes, the peak’s rocks turn wonderful shades of orange and, in contrast, the desert in front of it reflects cool muted colors. If you ever get a chance you should definitely go and see it in person.
