Painting By Foot – Photo essay
Portrait of artist Gusti Putu Suwini who I had the pleasure of meeting and photographing in Ubud Bali 12th August 2010. She is pictured here sitting on her balcony where she happily works. I was captivated by her brilliant warm smile and graceful spirit.

Gusti is a 25 year old Balinese woman who at 3 months of age developed a disease accompanied by fever which resulted in paralysis of her limbs. At a young age Gusti asked her parents to buy her an ink marker and drawing book. Since then she has been painting with the use of her foot. She begins by scratching the ink marker with the marker inserted between her toes and adds color using pastels.

Gusti lives at Jalan Kajeng and spends her days with her mother watching television where she gains inspiration for her paintings. Her wonderful work is available for purchase. I feel fortunate to have met her and bought some of her work. It was very difficult to chose a piece!

My work embodies an appreciation of the beauty and wonder of life that surrounds me. The images in this gallery portray everyday subjects that captivate me, bring me joy or that strike a nostalgic cord. My art tends to be aesthetic in nature and reflects what I find visually and emotionally stirring. For me photography is a meditative process that awakens my senses, induces a sense of inner calm and allows me to completely lose myself in the present moment.
