oh to be a teenager, and so sure that you know it all
to always live on the edge, never consider you might fall
to know there is no doubt, in where your future lies
you’ve got it all figured out, the world’s your apple pie

to be certain no one can imagine, how you truly feel
for no one else has been there, so for them it can’t be real
you can’t understand why, it’s anyone’s business but your own
how you choose to live your life, now that you’re fully grown

so what if you don’t clean your room, do dishes or sleep all day
those are your decisions to make, bug me, and I’ll just move away
of course it’s still expected, mom will cook do your laundry lend you the car
for hadn’t they always told you, that you were their rising star

you think it’s you mothers own fault, if she didn’t sleep that night
you decided you wouldn’t come home, she knows that you have rights
why can’t she just accept, when you decide not to phone
you can do what ever you like, now that you’re fully grown

you’re so sure there’s not a chance, your parents could understand
they’ve never been where you are, you’re as different as sky and land
there’s no point in trying to talk, for different languages do you speak
no doubt in you mind that talking to them, you must sound Greek

they have no right to ask, what you do where you go or who you see
after all it is non of their business, now that you’ve turned sixteen
they couldn’t possibly remember, what is was like at your age
how everything was of major importance, and life was one big stage

but we do remember, and it’s harder because of what we know
try to explain this to your teenager, and they’ll tell you where to go
for they are just like us, and have to learn it on their own
and we have little choice, now that they think they’re fully grown

as parents we just have to remember, our folks survived and so will we
we can love them and know we did our best, hoping someday they’ll agree
