You started as just a little twinkle
in the corner of your daddy’s eye
and before that night was over
something wondrous was growing inside

I could feel you from the beginning
a great love glowing deep within
and so began the count down
as we waited for you life to begin

we rushed to the nearest bookstore
for knowledge and names to choose
we started to prepare for your arrival
there seemed no time to lose

we went on wild shopping sprees
buying some of this and some of that
we bought everything in pink and blue
including gloves and baseball caps

we spent hours looking at pictures
in all the books that we’d bought
that showed us what you looked like
when you were barely more than a dot

you can’t imagine our excitement
anticipation and great delight
marking off the days on the calendar
before we went to bed each night

then the was the first of many
joyous and amazing things to come
when you first moved inside me
I knew for sure I was now a mom

I think your father was a bit jealous
for this was something only I could feel
I waited for the day he could touch my stomach
and you kick letting him know you were real

as time went on the bigger I grew
I could no longer see my toes
but I now had a built-in table
that was just below my nose

it was a handy place to put my ice-cream
while I reached for the pickle jar
cause it’s great if you’re eating constantly
to not have to walk that far

as your last month inside was coming to an end
you wouldn’t believe the thoughts in my mind
I began to think that I really wasn’t pregnant
I would look and feel like this for the rest of time

and then when it finally began to happen
your moment to make an entrance had arrived
I was sure it was anything but that
causing such strange feelings deep inside

but then you started getting impatient
it was your time and you wanted out
there was no time for arguing with you
I think it was then I began to shout

phone the doctor get me to the hospital
because our baby wants to be born
your father tried to be comforting
looking a bit frightened and forlorn

there’s not a book that could ever explain
how it feels to give birth to your child
but I know it’s the greatest gift in your life
when your child looks at you and smiles
