Short-eared Owl – Asio flammeus. Taken in a wetlands management area (protected) of the Mission Valley in western Montana, USA. This owl is a year round resident of Montana and prefers to live and hunt in open grasslands, even agricultural areas like this. It is one of the most widely distributed owls in the world. A medium sized owl averaging 15 inches in length, it is the most diurnal of owls often hunting during the day. I think it was posing for me; the eyes mesmerized me and my camera.

This was my first Short-eared Owl photo op. I was thrilled that it gave me this opportunity.

Excellent capture, even for handheld. Way to go, Merle:) Cat

  • I was so pleased that hand holding the big, heavy lens created this shot. Thanks for saying.

Beautiful image Merle! I hear them in the huge woods behind the house but never see them….love the eyes! ~Sam

  • Thank you Sam. This particular species is an open field owl. Surprising to me because I see owls in the woods mostly. This guy was very impressive and cooperative.

Congratulations Merle on your June 2012 Montana Group Feature !! Fantastic capture !

  • Thanks Gisela, I really love this photo. It was the luck of the draw to see him, stop the car and have him not fly away. Then he did fly away, circle the field and come back to a fence post near by. What a gift.
