Mallard – Anas platyrhynchos – taken at the Lee Metcalf Wildlife Refuge north of Stevensville, Montana USA in early July 2011. Fairly common in western Montana, the mallard is a medium sized dabbling duck. The female’s plumage is similar year-round. Look for a broken streaky pattern of buff, white, gray, or black on brown feathers, white outer tail-feathers, contrastingly pale belly and under tail-coverts and prominent dark eyeline. She has a dark blue/purple patch on her wing and orange legs and feet.
