Indian Paintbrush: The family is Scrophulariaceae or Figwort and the genus, Castilleja.
This photo was taken in the Bitterroot Mountains on an open slope north of Bear Creek Canyon, west of Victor, Montana, USA.
Stems have several flowers in a relatively short and broad cluster with the flowers and bracts close together. The flower cluster is bright red, scarlet or orange, occasionally crimson and rarely yellow.
There are many varieties in Montana and I am not sure which variety this is but there are many of them where I took the photo. The color is a nice punctuation to the many yellow and blue flowers this time of year.
