Northern Flicker finding a winter snack by

This flicker lives in an abandoned apple orchard at the base of the Bitterroot Mountains west of Victor, Montana. Usually they don’t hang around long enough for a photo, but today this one didn’t want to leave its meal giving me the opportunity to take this photo Jan. 4, 2010. It didn’t let me get very close, so this isn’t full frame, but it is pretty.

It was a fairly warm winter for us and you can see the red shoots on the apple tree branch.

  • I wish I would have been closer. Maybe this winter I can do better. This old orchard is secluded and a wonderful place for photography and all I have to do is hike a short way to get to it.
