I am flesh with a grunt
Primeval but modern
I know my Gilgamesh
Out of the darkness
Blackened like a bush-fired tree
I live this life
But I do not feel free.
I have seen blackened trees
Burnt by the Sun:
The heat of a bushfire
Taking a loved one.
But I have endured its heat
And my heart did not miss a beat.
I love this life
And all that will transpire.
I have slept with a loved one
And kissed every part:
A body is like a country
We can dwell, but never depart.
The importance of love is to ensure
We let free
The spirit within us
And, another’s heart;
For it is but a feather.
Love does not come without a cost,
But if treated well, will last forever.
I love my land
Its wet rivers and sand
The sway of tall gums,
The smallest of wild flowers
And the way that they stand.
They way they invite small insects
To take them as they are.
I now understand.
They also sleep with their loved ones
And know every part,
And i know that in life
There is always a fresh start.
But how can I describe the stars above?
The coating of clouds
The cooing of a dove?
I am but flesh
And a grunt!
But for all this,
I can still but love.
