“He’s dead,” Daddy said flatly. “He’s just gone. He’s gone, honey.” He said to Dolores as he walked through to the kitchen. “We got there and they said ‘He’s expired.’ That was it. Just that ‘he’s expired’. God damn it. God damn it. He’s gone. All right? He’s just gone.”

Dolores tried to touch Mimi’s arm and he jerked it away. His breathing got heavy and then he sat at the kitchen counter. Kit thought it was a good thing, ‘cause he looked to her like he was going to faint. Mimi placed his face in his hands and he began to cry softly, his breathing became heavier, faster as he arched his back and held his arms outstretched and then it came. Mimi’s heart had shattered.. Smashed into smithereens. His pain so severe that as he breathed out, his scream shook the pictures of fruit that hung on the wall. The agony was making him angry. He slammed his fist to the countertop.

“Jesus Christ,” he bellowed. “There is no God. Don’t any son of a bitch tell me that this was meant to be. That had he gone to war, he might have died anyway. There is no God. This is not how it was supposed to be.”

Kit, Mary and Dolores stood motionless in the kitchen; Kit half afraid to move. Their tears rolled down their cheeks as they watched Mimi rise and vomit into the kitchen sink.

“Thank you”, she said modestly. “Have you checked your bubblemail lately”?
