High School's your Kingdom: Then and Now

High School’s your kingdom,
Haha I bet you agree.
Many people love you
And your friends there are many
Your hairs always perfect
Like a model from Vogue
Many girls are envious
Of those extra small clothes

High School’s your Kingdom
You know its true
There isn’t a party your not invited to.
Grades aren’t too important
Lets face it you
Have better things to do.
You live for drama
And tell rumors that aren’t true

High School’s your Kingdom
And you don’t question it
Guys fall to their knees
Begging for you
Calling you their one in a million

High School’s your Kingdom
As though it might seem
The drama backfires
And rumors are flying
You try to ignore them
But they’re all about you
You feel now as I do.

High School’s your kingdom
And you’re starting to regret it
Those friends are as fake as those 10inch
Extensions.
You’re starting to flunk math, science, and Spanish.
And your ACT score ain’t so fantastic.

You decide college isn’t for you
You say I’ll try modeling
Ha.
Lets just say it didn’t work out for you
They say you were nothing new or special
Just another pretty face
Not a one in million

So you move back to town
You’re now out of high school
Where do you go?
Where can you get a job,
with just a high school diploma?

Now you’re at Taco Bell working minimum wage
Just getting by and living the life page by page
You live in a one-room apartment.

And you are…

Alone.
Now the spotlight is off you
No more followers and wanna-bes
No more boys following your every move
No more compliments for the once cared for hair
Or the extra small clothes that have stretched into large

She thinks to herself “if only I went to college I could be
A lawyer, doctor, or maybe a Professor
Get money and live that lavish way
I thought would always be mine”

At the reunion…
They see you across the room.
They think to themselves is that really her
Once on top and as vain as ever
No one comes up to her and has long
Conversation,
They remember the days they were badly treated
And tormented beyond repair.

They think to themselves how they were laughed at
Because of their intelligence, appearance and all the above
She was the predator and they were her prey
Now the tables have turned.
Karma has taken an evil twist.

She hates who she is

…not like them.

Successful lives.
Parents.
Jobs That pay more than $7.25/hr.
Homes that they can’t get kicked out of,
or yelled at by the landlord.
Kids that are cute as cute can be
And spouses that love unconditional
And friends that are true at heart
Who have you back together or apart

Her reign over the kingdom has crumbled
Her 4 years of power are long gone
They got her nowhere
She wishes for a redo
But this is life, reality
And in reality there are no redos

High School was her kingdom
And now that is over
Her 10 minutes of fame is up
And all she can do is wonder
what her life would
Be like if she was real
Not fake or
Hidden behind caked on make-up
Only if she cared for the things that
Would last a lifetime
Instead of living for the now,
and losing her future.

Artist's Description

I know most of us either still in high school or out remember someone who seemed to have it all. All the friends, clothes, and so on. Almost like they had control over everyone. This poem was conjured up because it kind of brings you to realize the more important things in life that have a long term effects, instead of how this character desired instant satisfaction. Thanks for reading
