America

Written as part of a creative writing exercise, this is actually the second revision. The first one had fewer commercials in the beginning, and they were all political, but I really didn’t want this to turn into ‘Election Poem 2004’.

What the hell happened here?
America was based upon idealism,
The betterment of the human condition.
The Pursuit of Happiness!
CNN, NBC, Fox, the local news
All seem to have lost that.
Murder and political scandals sell,
And our heroes go unsung in the mudslinging and blood and gore.
Our soul as America is gone.
Life and Liberty are commodities to be sold,
And the distinction between Happiness and Self-Gratification has all but disappeared.
It’s about the next buck,
The next fuck,
The next big thing
As you sell your soul to the man for a martini and a George Foreman grill.
America the Beautiful is now America by Maybelline
And Halliburton pulls the strings behind the scenes of our little bit of
World Domination Theater.
