Artist's Description

Essex County Psychiatric Hospital Center Firehouse.

The last time I drove down the road through the complex, all the buildings were gone on the right side of the street [north side] except for this building, the firehouse. This is the side of the street and the property they propose to build a neighborhood of exclusive homes.

I had an experience with this building that I will NEVER forget. My daughter and I had driven out here one night to see what the buildings looked like and felt like at night. Once we got here and drove slowly, we both felt very uncomfortable and wished we had never come. I always regret my stupid ideas to be honest with you when it comes to things like this. Anyway, we realized it would be a great idea to turn around, stop and get some coffee somewhere and forget about this silly idea. I drove up and turned right into a driveway that I thought was the old admission building that is close to the Verona High School property.

As I pulled up to turn around I realized I had pulled into the drive of this firehouse instead – that I had turned right too soon. I was concerned because there are big signs up everywhere on this side of the street that say NO TRESPASSING since a private company owns this property now. There are security trucks that drive back and forth and I know people have been arrested and fined for trespassing because everyone is interested in climbing around the buildings and ghost hunters are always trying to gain acess. Anyway, I knew I had to turn around and get out of that parking lot and drive right away before the security or the police came. The windows of my van were rolled down on both sides because my daughter and I had been taking photos as we drove on the other roads.

My daughter was reprimanding me for pulling into this driveway and I was arguing at her that I was going as fast as I could and I would turn right around. THEN out of the darkness from the building came a high pitched female voice saying something like “WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP” It honestly sounded like a crazy woman trying to imitate the fire or ambulance siren. It was clear as a bell, very loud but VERY unearthly and eerie. I just kept up and kept getting louder. My daughter and I just fell silent needless to say, and I never turned and drove out of there SO fast in my life. It was SO unexpected and it was like nothing I have ever heard before. Of course after the fact we both kicked ourselves that we had been so scared we did not pull out cameras out and record it. I will never forget what it sounded like and my daughter and I often tease each other and scare each other by imitating it at the most inopertune times and sneak up on each other and then make that sound. We laugh hysterically but still deep inside we are scared about it in remembering it.

Interesting enough, on one of the Ghosthunters episodes this last year, the members were SOMEWHERE – I think it was a haunted theatre that was reported to have a ghost that was a woman and crazy and she made weird sounds. During the investigation there was a high pitched strange female voice, and you guessed it, it went “WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP” like our firehouse lady and my daughter and I nearly died – we looked at each other and said – did you hear that??

Sometimes I want to get in the van and drive over there at night on a full moon night with my camera and pull in the firehouse and see if I hear it again and record it. and sometimes I tell myself I will NEVER drive over there again and never get near that building. But ALWAYS I say I will never forget that sound and hearing it go on and on and on and knowing it was not of this world. You can laugh at me – I am not a superstitious person and I am a strong Christian, but I will tell you it DID happen and I did HEAR it and I will never forget what I heard. I don’t even know if the firehouse is still there, but I bet that WHOOP WHOOP lady is still there… hope the people who build and buy the exclusive homes will enjoy her WHOOPING.
