Beechbound, a Scottish baronial castle, Newport Rhode Island by

Beechbound 127 Harrison Avenue
Newport RI

Beechbound, on Harrison Avenue, was designed by Peabody & Stearns for William Burden in 1895. Burden was a stock broker, married to Florence Twombly, daughter of Hamilton & Florence Vanderbilt Twombly. Sad to say, rather than being a private residence or a historic landmark and museum, The castle is now a gated condo community.

Here is the read out from the real estate page for a condo:

Beechbound, a Scottish baronial castle designed by the renowned architectural firm Peabody and Stearns(1895), is a premier Newport harborfront estate condominium. Stately and grand, Beechbound is sited on 3.7 acres of Olmsted designed grounds with cascading lawns overlooking picture perfect Brenton Cove and Narragansett Bay.

Beechbound’s grand mahogany entrance, designed to take in the spectacular views, opens onto a magnificent open patio overlooking the harbor. The condominium is wonderfully welcoming and includes three bedrooms, two baths, sunny eat-in kitchen, spacious great room with original Delft tile fireplace and spectacular harbor and bridge views.

Unique features include a boat house, floating dock with deep water access, launch service to town as well as the Ida Lewis Yacht Club and New York Yacht Club. Located near Fort Adams and the majestic Ocean Drive, Beechbound is ideal as a primary residence, weekend retreat or vacation home.
