Thanks Amarica. Yes I’ve read this article, but unsure what exactly is being proposed here. Surely Laws passed in the US re. copyright ownership/registration or whatever cannot be applied outside the US anyway can they? Does Copyright not remain with the Author/Artist whether it is registered or not? Am I missing something here? Works will be ‘stolen/orphaned/copied’ whether they are registered or not. This is just an extension of what’s already in place. What next, register your registered works? if someone wants to use it without your permission, they will. Your only protection, is to prove you did it first, registration doesn’t prove that, or someone would register the Mona Lisa first.
...I’m puzzled and misunderstanding this, can someone explain please – do I understand that it is proposed that I won’t have copyright on anything I do until I register it in the US first?

I’ve used the “poor man’s copyright” many times. That’s where I mail an original of something to myself and don’t open the envelope. The Post Office date stamp is my record of when I did it. So I use Red Bubble and my other sites the same way. I’m pretty confident it will work just the same way. I’m not suggesting anybody use my trick because I’m not a lawyer, but so far nobody’s tried to get rich or famous using my stuff, anyway. I think John B, above, makes sense. The thing to do is to check with a copyright lawyer, which I can’t afford to do. Internationally, I think copyrights are recognized kind of the way marriages are—as binding. Taiwan or someplace doesn’t recognize copyrights, I read somewhere. At any rate, I feel confident that I can prove I did some intellectual or artistic work first by its date in my computer and its reception date in an online gallery.

    Thanks for pointing this out.

I’ve always felt I could ‘prove’ I created my 3D scenes because I retain the unrendered versions; but who knows? That whole bit about someone else ‘registering’ your work first is scary.
