That's the idea!

From a regular encouraging comment by my orchestra conductor.

‘That’s the idea!’ the conductor yelled,
The orchestra knew that all was well
They’d counted correctly all the way through,
Making sense of the hullabaloo
Even when it didn’t sound too good,
The strings, the brass and winds of wood
All had a go, and tasted success
Even though they’d probably guessed.

Some were early, others late
The music didn’t sound that great
But that was ok, there was still time
By the concert, it would all be fine.

Later that night, she tapped her baton,
“Violins, what’s going on?
There’s a section that you missed,
You bowed it, and it’s written pizz.”
“Did we?” they asked, closely looking.
While this storm was slowly cooking,
There was some trouble in the brass.
“This passage just goes way too fast,
Where are we supposed to take a breath?
For us, this piece will be the death!”

“Alright, alright!” the conductor said,
“I’ll do it slowly so you won’t be dead.”
The players then sighed with relief,
Although their lips would come to grief.

Then the winds had problems too,
Although it was how they blew
Do they do it in one breath?
Or will that cause their death?
Do the notes they separate,
Or will that make them come in late?
They give it a trial run,
Start a countdown – three, two, one!
Everybody blew and played,
And the music was ok
The pitch was good, the rhythm clear
And at the end – “That’s the idea!”
