Four days into the new year saw the first major bushfire in Perth for 2009. In the suburb of Brookdale (about 25 kms south of the city), 70 firefighters fought to bring the fire under control.
The firefighters, plus five helitacs and two fixed wing water bombers worked together to extinguish the flames which burned 82 hectares of bushland.

There were no threats to houses in the area but a number of roads were closed in the area.

Police and fire crews block roads surrounding the area.
A summer heatwave hasn’t helped the threat of more bushfires this season with temperatures in Perth unrelenting. The maximum temperature in Perth has been over 32 degrees C (90 f) for 14 days straight with only 4 of those days under 35 degrees C (95 f).
A cool break is expected for the next couple of day with maximum temperatures expected to reach only 27 and 28 degrees C before returning to the low 30’s again after that.

Thanks Sarah, at least it wasn’t as big as the last one there!

Great work Amanda, it reminds me of something you’d see in a local newspaper.
Amanda McLennan:
Thankyou Nat, I appreciate your comments, I am a fan of your work (I know it through the old facebook group) and look forward to going through your redbubble portfolio now.

thats a great set of pics Amanda.x
Amanda McLennan:
Thankyou Catherine, there was a fire that went through the same area about 7 years ago but it was a lot bigger. My parents lived there then and most of their land was burned, fortunately they suffered no damage except for a couple fence posts!
Richard Hamilt...
Nice set of pics Amanda, but such a shame. x
Amanda McLennan:
Thanks Richard – it was fortunate that there was no property damage or injury, the worst part of it is the realisation the fire was more than likely deliberately lit.

A lot seem to be started like that these days. :-((

I really like this. I have photos too that are more news photos than art photos. You’ve really captured some great images that tell us a story, especially with your "headlines’ added in!! Maybe, I’ll have to give it a try.
Amanda McLennan:
Thankyou, I thought it would be good to add some text to the photo’s. There are a few more metropolitain fires today in Perth – we had a maximum temperature of 42C and it is perfect weather for them.
You should definately give it a go.
